ON SECURITY CHECKS FOR VISA APPLICANTS

published a final rule amending regulations related to
documentation of nonimmigrants and reflecting increased
security measures, including fingerprinting and name checks
of substantially all applicants for U.S. nonimmigrant
visas, beginning on January 1, 2008?

immigrant spent four days forgotten in an isolated holding
cell at a courthouse with no food, water, or toilet?

that Adriana Torres-Flores, 38, appeared in
court Thursday and pleaded not guilty to a charge of selling
pirated CDs, but a judge ordered her held because she is in
the country illegally?
¨ù
that Bailiff Jarrod Hankins put her in the
cell to await transport to jail, and just forgot her!!?
¨ù
that she wasn't found until Monday morning
when Hankins opened the door?
¨ù
that she was then treated at a hospital and
allowed to go home?

that absent controlling factors to the
contrary, a state law misdemeanor offense of conspiracy to
distribute marijuana qualifies as an ¡°aggravated felony¡±
under the Immigration Law where its elements correspond to
the elements of the Federal felony offense of conspiracy to
distribute an indeterminate quantity of marijuana?

that imposition of costs and surcharges in the
criminal sentencing context constitutes a form of
¡°punishment¡± or ¡°penalty¡± for purposes of establishing that
an alien has suffered a ¡°conviction¡± within the meaning of
the Immigration and Nationality Act?
